Doris Louise (Grotrian) Scheumann age 96, went to be with her Lord on January 22, 2026 at Lincolnshire Care facility in Fort Wayne, IN. Grandma Dori was a much-loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother and her presence will be deeply missed.
Doris was born on June 24, 1929 in Bristol, CT. She was baptized on July 14, 1929 and confirmed on April 25,1943, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bristol CT.
She was joined in marriage to Vernon Scheumann on May 26, 1951 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Decatur, IN.
She is survived by her children, Sandra & Don Kammeyer, Woodburn, IN, Mark & Nancy Scheumann Cedar Rapids, IA, Jon & Cathy Scheumann, North Garden, VA and Judith (Steve dec)Chaney, Fort Wayne, IN, ten grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband Vern.
Doris lived a life of Christian service to those around her. She cared for her neighbors and most recently she served as a Stephan Minister, paired with someone undergoing a life crisis, just listening without offering a solution. Imagine Doris not being able to tell someone how to fix their problem!
Doris's early childhood years were in Bristol, CT which forever formed her Connecticut Yankee personality and faith in God. She had many wonderful memories of her childhood home on Lexington St, her Grandma Schaffrick's house on Jacobs St. (and all the Schaffrick family who lived there), and the many the special places in Bristol. Her early love of basketball began while attending games at the Bristol Armory down the street from Grandma Schaffrick's. Many weeks each summer were spent in Indiana visiting her extended Grotrian family.
At the age of 16, her father received a call as a teacher at St. Peter Lutheran School near the Fuelling Settlement in Indiana. It was at her father's installation ceremony that Doris first met Vern, who came to the event with one of her cousins.
She was warmly received at Monmouth High School and was known as that well-dressed "damn Yankee". After graduating high school, Grandma Dori attended beautician's school in Fort Wayne and one of her first jobs was as a manicurist at a hosiery factory.
Doris and Vern first lived in Decatur and eventually moved to Five Points (Woodburn) where Vern began a new job. They built a house on 23010 Park Lane in Woodburn in 1956 where she lived a long happy life with her family, Park Lane neighbors and Christ Lutheran Church friends. This is where her children learned many of her great sayings that we still repeat today. "Because I said so!" "Mom said", "You learn how to hang if you hang long enough"(What?).
She often had a book in her lap, her reading tastes being true crime or bible studies!
She and Vern took trips to Australia, Alaska, and Germany-Italy. She packed the camping trailers for trips to the New York World's Fair '65, Montreal Expo '67, and many Crooked Lake camping weekends. Later on, in the winter they would leave the kids at home and go snow skiing with friends at Boyne Mountain, Michigan. She travelled to wherever her grandkids were to watch their sports, dance recitals and school plays, from grade school to college and beyond.
Doris and Vern surprised us all when they bought a lot on North Snow Bay and went on to build their cottage on the lake. She made lots of memories for us all at our 4th of July family reunions!
Grandma Dori loved IU basketball and kept game stats while watching. (Where did those score books go?) She played cards, Hand and Foot, with a group of her church friends. Her session trying to teach us Hand and Foot at North Snow Bay is legendary.
How many of those button sized molasses cookies do you think she made for us all?
Her last great adventure was whitewater rafting in Colorado when she was 90!
Grandma Dori had a lot of questions at the end of her life. Why am I still here? Will I know Vern in heaven? Will I know what's going on with my family when I'm in heaven?
She had no doubt where she would be after her passing!
The family requests that donations be made in Doris's memory to Christ Lutheran Church, her church home for seventy years.
She will be laid to rest privately in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Woodburn.
